SUMMARY:TailCut: Improving Performance and Lifetime of SSDs using Pattern-
 Aware State Encoding
DESCRIPTION:Research Manuscript\n\nTailCut: Improving Performance and Life
time of SSDs using Pattern-Aware State Encoding\n\nLee, Kim, Choi, Lee, Ki
m\n\nAlthough lateral charge loss is considered as a dominant error source
in 3D NAND flash memory, little is known about its detailed characteristi
cs at the storage system level. From a device characterization study, we o
bserved that lateral charge loss strongly depends on vertically adjacent s
tate patterns and a few specific patterns are responsible for a large port
ion of bit errors from lateral charge loss. We propose a new state encodi
ng scheme, called TailCut, which removes vulnerable state patterns by modi
fying encoded states. By removing vulnerable patterns, TailCut can improv
e the SSD lifetime and read latency by 35% and 29%, respectively.\n\nTopic
